The Green Bus Tango

Have you ever seen a green bus? Maybe. But did it tango too? I doubt it. So stick around and I’ll show you what a green bus doing the tango looks like.

The story begins at my alma mater: Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment. It was a school whose name was too long to write on my lunch box until I decided on the initials: MSAE.

It was also a special school, not just because of its name, but in other ways too. I mean it was accredited and offered grades K–12 just like most other places. But it was unique because it focused on the development of our intelligence, creativity and consciousness (i.e. wakefulness or alertness) while we were learning our reading, writing and arithmetic.

And how did they do that? Well for starters, as students, we began and ended our school day with the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique and some easy, yoga postures instead of jump rope and jumping jacks like at other schools. I mean we had jump rope too, and lots of other sports. But the meditation was a special addition.

I remember it very clearly; pushing my desk up against the wall to make room on the carpeted floor for everyone to roll and stretch. And then sitting down against my backrest in the middle of the room, snuggled in my blanket and gently closing my eyes for about 10 minutes along with the other students. Mmmm!

That was one of my favorite parts of the school day. Meditation gave me such a sweet sinking feeling, sort of like I was diving through soft red velvet. And afterwards I always felt deeply nourished and energized. It was fun!

When I got older, as a result of that experience, I came to the conclusion that human energy was the most valuable resource I had. And I am very grateful for my education at MSAE, where school year after school year, I was conserving and developing my inner human energy, every day.

Now, many years later, MSAE seems to have pretty much the same program. Through the schools unique curriculum the students are spontaneously growing in caring and compassion, not only for each other, but for their environment as well.

That’s why when I heard about The Green Bus Tango I knew it had to be the subject of my blog. What happened is the MSAE students entered a contest to win a hybrid school bus and be "America's Greenest School". And they did so by creating a video called, you guessed it: The Green Bus Tango!

And now finally, you have the chance to enjoy it just as I did. And when you are done, you will understand how it really is possible for a bus to be green and do the tango at the same time. Here it is, the 3 minute video, watch it!
